The Futhark
Rune 'alphabets' are commonly known as 'Futhark'. Like our Roman alphabet is deduced from the Greek letter sequence, Futhark is named after the sound of its first six letters: F, U, TH, A, R, K!

And like other scripts its original from has been continuously developed in the course of the years. Academics call the original and oldest form 'Common Germanic Futhark', a script that consists of 24 letters.

Runes were not only carved letters but powerful symbols with at least one meaning, the latter epitomizing an idea or object:

	Fehu Corresponds with the letter: F The meaning of this rune is 'cattle', an important economical factor among humans symbolizing wealth, money and fertility.
	Uruz Corresponds with the letter: U or V The rune signifies the 'aurochs', huge, untameable wild cattle, which are extinct today. It strengthens power, courage, fastness and vitality.
	Thurisaz Corresponds with the letter: TH (like in English) It symbolizes a 'thorn' or 'giant' and is used to activate the defense against enemies.
	Ansuz Corresponds with the letter: A This rune means 'god' or 'godhood'. It stands for inspiration, wisdom, creative inspiration, revelation and judiciousness.
	Raidho Corresponds with the letter: R There are several meanings ascribed such as 'voyage', 'cartwheel', 'ride' or 'cart'. It hence symbolizes movement, end and recommencement.
	Kaunaz Corresponds with the letter: K This rune corresponds to 'torch' and 'light' and fosters mental enlightenment and creativity.
	Gebo Corresponds with the letter: G It stands for 'gift' and signifies harmony and generosity.
	Wunjo Corresponds with the letter: W The meaning of this rune is 'blissfulness/rapture', 'comfort' and 'frame'. It corresponds to pleasure, partnership, harmony and wealth.
	Hagalaz Corresponds with the letter: H The rune implies 'hail' and stands for elementary power,for balance of powers but also for perfection of the inner harmony.
	Naudhiz Corresponds with the letter: N It means 'misery' and 'limitation' and strengthens the will to accept all misery and face fears.
	Isa Corresponds with the letter: I It symbolizes 'ice' and helps developing willpower and concentration.
	Jera Corresponds with the letter: J, partly G and A This rune refers to the following meanings: 'year', 'harvest', 'year of wealth' and therefore stands for fertility, harmony and the rhythm of nature.
	Eihwaz Corresponds with the letter: Y This rune symbolizes the yew tree, the wood of which was assumed to be holy. It gives us protection and wisdom and connects earth and sky.
	Perthro Corresponds with the letter: P This rune refers to a 'fold yard' or 'kettle'. It improves initiation and gives knowledge about the future.
	Algiz Corresponds with the letter: Z This rune signifies a 'bow'. The bow provides protection and defense, it is a general sign of protection.
	Sowilo Corresponds with the letter: S It symbolizes the sun and gives vitality, hope and energy.
	Teiwaz Corresponds with the letter: T This rune stands for 'welkin', an 'arrow' or a 'spearhead' and corresponds to persistence and courage and serves justice.
	Berkana Corresponds with the letter: B It symbolizes the 'birch', a holy tree connected to 'mother nature'. It gives life and protection!
	Ehwaz Corresponds with the letter: E This is so-called 'horse rune'! Faithful horses served in agriculture and for transport! This rune thus stands for faith, loyalty and movement.
	Mannaz Corresponds with the letter: M This rune symbolizes man as an individual and as species! It supports the mental development and strengthens the mind.
	Laguz Corresponds with the letter: L This rune refers to the water, the source and the river of life. It stimulates concentration and intuition.
	Inguz Corresponds with the letter: NG This rune signifies the 'egg'. Its meaning is fertility and growth.
	Othila Corresponds with the letter: O The rune stands for 'heritage' and 'home'. It protects one's own house and maintains order.
	Dagaz Corresponds with the letter: D This rune of light symbolizes the day and the sun. It gives balance and builds a bridge to the 'other world'.
